T&L Firearms Safety, LLC (dba Arapahoe Arms)

Arapahoe Arms provides a myriad of firearm, self-defense, and recreational training courses to the general public. Students will learn core competencies, including firearms safety, marksmanship, handling, and when and where you can carry or use your firearm. Student feedback consistently states that our class provides high-quality training at an affordable price.

Whether you are an expert or have never touched a firearm before, you will gain the knowledge and confidence required for consistent, accurate marksmanship. Youth are also welcome to attend, and will learn firearm safety in addition to marksmanship. Remember, at all times, safety is paramount!

Successfully completing either the NRA Basic Pistol or NRA Personal Protection courses, fulfills the training requirements for the Colorado Concealed Weapons Permit.

I'm always looking for new places to hold classes. If you know of land available for shooting or if you have a classroom facility and would like us to host a class at your location feel free to contact us.

The Concealed Handgun Manual

A student put this book in my hands and now I want it in yours. The Concealed Handgun Manual contains several hundred pages and is packed with advice and information for anyone who carries a concealed handgun for protection or is thinking of doing so. The book includes many actual incidents of ordinary citizens using handguns to defend themselves against criminal threat or attack.

You will learn:

  • Methods of carrying a handgun and how to draw it from concealment.
  • The advantages and disadvantages of laser sights.
  • How to avoid trouble and stay safe.
  • The legal, physical, and psychological effects of dropping the hammer on another human being.

The reciprocity information in the last chapter has been completely revised and updated. Read about changes in state concealed-carry laws, including how you now don’t need a license to carry concealed in Arizona or, if you are a resident, in Wyoming.

Students can add this book to the shopping cart when registering for a course. The books will be delivered at the class you enroll in. Or you can send me an email and we can arrange to pick one up before or after any of my classes.

NRA Basic Pistol (meets Concealed Carry requirements)

Pistol Shooting

Americans own pistols today for a variety of reasons. Some people own pistols for personal protection. Other persons fire pistols in competitive shooting tournaments, including matches on the collegiate and Olympic level. Hunters are finding that the use of handguns can be a challenging and exciting experience.

A new shooter will quickly discover that pistol shooting is definitely fun! It's a sport that requires good hand and eye coordination, plus mental concentration and discipline. The purpose of this course is to teach the safe and proper use of a pistol so that it can be enjoyed to the fullest extent.

The certificate for this course will be issued upon completion of the qualification test. Concealed Weapon Permits are not specific to a handgun type or model, and neither is our training course. Students will learn and demonstrate fundamentals when dealing with handguns in general and are allowed to use any handgun they choose.

NRA Personal Protection (meets Concealed Carry requirements)

Basics of personal protection in the home

As a result of the increase in crime, recent years have seen an increased public interest in every aspect of self-defense and personal protection. Enrollment in martial-arts classes, sales of home and vehicle security systems, and interest in self-defense handguns and firearms training has never been greater. A sign of the public concern with personal safety has been the passage (in more than 30 states) of laws permitting law-abiding citizens the right to carry a concealed firearm.

For many, the term personal protection immediately evokes images of martial-arts techniques or a handgun in a nightstand. In truth, however, the use of force is only one of many methods that you can employ to defend life and limb, and indeed is used only as a last resort, when other methods have failed. For ethical, legal and practical reasons, it is always preferable to escape, evade, deter or otherwise avoid an attack rather than be forced to counter it with force. Furthermore, many states have laws requiring you to retreat as much as is safely possible before using force to defend yourself or others (although in most states you do not have a "duty to retreat" in home defense situations, which are the focus of this course).

Long Range Rifle

Long range rifle Long range rifle Long range rifle

I've spent many hours on the rifle range teaching Marines to shoot accurately at long distances. Our motto always has been "One Shot, One Kill". I stress the importance of a clean and accurate shot. I also have participated in Shooting Competitions ranging from 200-600 yds and will give you everything I know to acquire the target at these distances.

Let me just give you a hint of what you have to compensate for when shooting at these distances:

  • Accurately identify the distance to the target (Range Estimation)
  • Wind direction and speed at every 100 yards
  • Density of the Air (Elevation)
  • Ballistic Characteristics (weight of the projectile, amount of gun powder, shape of the projectile)
  • Firearm characteristics \ Firearm condition (Dirty, Hot, etc)
  • Angle to the target (shooting up\down hill) \ Speed and Direction of target
  • Effects of the Weather \ Heat Mirages \ Temperature of the air \ Direction of the Sun or light source

Defensive Shotgun

There's simply no better weapon for home defensive than a shotgun!

Whether you're using a Benelli M1 Super 90 Tactical or grandpa's hand-me-down, this class is intended to give students the knowledge and skills necessary to use any shotgun for home defense.

This course is taught by Steve Materkowski a Certified CO Law Enforcement Officer. Check out the "About Us" page to learn more about Steve and his numerous qualifications.

Why You Need This Class:

  • Shotgun Safety \ Determining the Proper Fit \ Managing the Recoil
  • Ammunition Selection \ Proper Loading and Unloading \ Proper Stance and Sighting
  • Patterning - Accountability for Every Round Fired
  • Basic Defensive Shooting \ Basic Movement While Shooting \ Basic Low Light Application
  • Cover and Concealment \ General Home Protection Fundamentals

NRA Basic Shotgun

The Basics of Shotgun Shooting

This course has one goal - to lead the student through the steps necessary to perform the basic skills of shotgunning; to guide the beginner to the door marked "shotgunning opportunities" and to provide the means of opening that door. In order to achieve this goal, you'll need to understand one of the basic learning concepts used in the course's preparation.

First, it is the idea of learning "simple" skills before attempting more "complex" or difficult ones.

Beginning with the simple aspects of an activity allows you to learn more quickly, to enhance the likelihood of initial achievement and to build confidence in your ability to perform the skill. This provides a strong foundation from which to successfully pursue the many shotgun activities.

Too many beginners make the mistake of picking up a shotgun and shooting away at all kinds of moving targets. This is akin to diving into the deep end of the pool on your first attempt at swimming. You wouldn't do that - or at least not but once! You would start at the shallow end and get comfortable with being in the water. You'd learn to put your head under, then on to floating, kicking and eventually, a simple arm stroke. As you learn to put them together, you would attempt to swim in the shallow end, gaining confidence by going a little further each time. Finally, after considerable practice (and only when you fell ready) you would move to the deep end to test your new skills. Shotgun shooting is no different. If you're to be successful in learning to shoot, a step-by-step procedure must be used. This course utilizes just such a procedure.

Considered individually, each step is relatively simple. Combined with the right shotgun, target, ammunition, and practice (like the beginning swimmer moving to the deep end), you will be ready to shoot, and hit, your first series of targets.

Colorado Hunter Education (does not meet Concealed Carry requirements)

Colorado Hunter Education Manual

Hunter Education is designed to benefit inexperienced hunters regardless of age and is an excellent refresher course for anyone who enjoys hunting.

The program continues to grow in communities where public-spirited citizens want to reduce the possibility of hunting injuries and ensure that hunters behave responsibly.

To hunt safely and responsibly is the duty of each hunter; to make an enjoyable and safe experience even safer is the responsibility of all.

Hunting is much more than just taking a game animal with a firearm; it means meeting your responsibility to the land, the landowner, other hunters, the game, the public and to yourself.

We see the world changing around us daily. Some people are even questioning the need for hunting. As a hunter, your knowledge and conduct will play a large part in the future of the activity. What hunting will be tomorrow is really up to you!

This course offers training and education on the following topics: Wildlife Conservation, Firearms and Hunting Safety, Laws and Regulations, Survival and Navigation, and much much more.

Surviving A Wilderness Emergency.....on your own!

Survival Survival2 Survival3

What does it take to survive? What does the word “survival” mean? Why do some people survive and yet others die in similar situations? What kind of preparation is needed for an “unplanned night out?”

Surviving a wilderness emergency begins with a recognition that somewhere, sometime you might have to spend an unplanned (not unexpected) night or two out in the backcountry. Unfortunately the majority of people believe that it will always be someone else who is thrown from a horse; someone else who becomes the lone survivor of an aircraft accident; someone else whose car slides off of the road and they end up having to survive in the car until rescued; someone else who gets lost after following a wounded animal into unfamiliar country. That “someone else” is in fact each one of us! Survival experiences can occur anywhere and often occur when we least expect to find ourselves in trouble – when we are least prepared to cope!

Low Light Tactics For Concealed Carry

Low Light Tactics

The purpose of the Low Light Tactics Course is to educate the student as to the use of a flashlight in all situations ranging from normal activities to lethal force engagements, and to increase the students chances of surviving and prevailing in lethal-force encounters occurring in diminished lighting conditions.

Why You Need This Course:

  • Most fatal shootings occur during the hours of darkness or in a location where the light is very dim.
  • Most violent crime occurs during hours of darkness.
  • Shootings can occur before your vision has had a chance to become dark-adapted.
  • Even during daylight hours searches could be required in low-light conditions (unlit structures, basements, closets, tunnels, etc.)
  • Everyone has a flashlight. It can be a liability or an asset depending on your ability to use it properly.
  • Most shootings occur in diminished lighting conditions, yet most training takes place under normal lighting conditions.
  • Survival is a 24-hour a day activity.

Close Quarters Defensive Concepts

Too many times we rely on the confidence of our concealed weapon when it's a simple fact that our firearm is a method of last resort. I can't preach it enough......that you MUST be in "imminent" danger of being killed AND a "lesser degree of force is inadequate" before you can even think about presenting your weapon. What about those situations where your firearm is not yet justified or a "Draw"--in under "2" seconds--isn't fast enough. This course is real life scenarios with full class participation!!!

You MUST have an alternative method for defending your life! Take this course and arm yourself with this additional level of defense.

  • Redirection and breakaways from attacker
  • Close Quarters Striking
  • Close Quarters Kicking
  • Basic Defense Against Edged and Blunt Weapons
  • Weapons Retention
